My Deal Won't Close or My Position Is Still Open on the Exchange
Closing usually happens in a click, but a few situations can leave a position open or a deal looking stuck. This guide explains each one and what to do.
Related but different: for a bot that stopped trading see Why Did My Bot Pause or Stop?; for what a deal is and where closed deals live, see Understanding Your Deals. This article is specifically about closing problems.
Key Takeaways
- A manual close sends a market order to close your position right away at the current price.
- If your exit is a limit order that hasn't reached its price yet, the position stays open until it fills — that's expected, not a failure.
- If you close the position directly on your exchange, Freya stops managing that bot and flags it — and it may leave your TP/SL orders live, so check for leftovers.
- Messages like "reduce-only rejected" or "position not found" usually mean the position is already closed.
- Panic Sell closes all your positions at once and reports any that failed — use Retry, then close any stragglers manually.
How Closing Normally Works
When you close a deal manually, Freya sends a market order to close the position at the current price, then cancels the bot's own remaining orders and wraps up the deal. You'll see the bot go from Closing to Closed, and the bot itself moves to Paused (a manual close doesn't immediately start a new deal). For futures, the close order is reduce-only, so Freya never closes more than this bot's share of the position.
"I Clicked Close but the Position Is Still Open"
A few possibilities:
- Your exit is a pending limit order. If your take-profit (or a limit close) is waiting at a price the market hasn't reached, the position stays open until it fills. This is normal — the order is placed, just not filled yet. If you want out now, use a market close.
- The close order was rejected. If the exchange refused the close — for example a balance/margin issue or a minimum-size problem — the deal stays open and you'll see it fail. The causes overlap with Why Did My Bot Pause or Stop?; fix the underlying issue and close again.
- Spot vs futures: spot "closing" means selling the asset back; futures closing uses a reduce-only order against the open position.
"I Closed It on the Exchange — Now the Bot Shows an Error"
If you close the position directly on your exchange (not through Freya), Freya detects that the position was closed outside of it, stops managing that bot, and flags it with an error (you'll see a message that the position was closed outside Freya Finance). This is expected behavior, not a malfunction.
When you close on the exchange yourself, Freya deliberately doesn't cancel the bot's leftover orders — in case you left them open on purpose. So after a manual exchange close, check your exchange for any take-profit or stop-related orders the bot had placed and cancel any you don't want. Note: a deal you closed this way is flagged as closed-externally and won't appear as a normal completed deal in your history.
The cleaner path, when you can, is to close through Freya so it tidies up its own orders for you.
"Reduce-Only Rejected" or "Position Not Found"
These messages sound alarming but usually mean the opposite of a problem:
- "Reduce-only order rejected. Position may already be closed." — Freya tried to close, but there was nothing left to reduce. The position is most likely already closed.
- "Position not found on exchange." — Freya couldn't find the position to close, typically because it was already closed (often externally). Freya verifies with the exchange and resolves the deal accordingly.
- "Order already cancelled." — the order Freya tried to cancel was already gone. Harmless.
If you see these, check your exchange: in most cases the position is already flat. If anything looks inconsistent, contact support.
"Panic Sell Didn't Close Everything"
Panic Sell closes all your running positions at once. Because each one is closed independently, the result can be partial — some succeed, some may fail (a rejected order, a position already gone). Freya reports per-position results:
- Read which positions failed.
- Use Retry for those.
- If any still won't close, close them individually (or check whether they're already flat on the exchange).
When to Contact Support
If a position genuinely seems stuck — Freya shows it open, your exchange shows it open, and closing keeps failing for no clear reason — reach out to [email protected] with the bot and details so the team can look into it.
Frequently Asked Questions
I closed my position but the bot still shows it open — why?
The most common reason is that your exit is a limit order waiting at a price the market hasn't hit yet — the position stays open until it fills, which is expected. The other possibility is that the close order was rejected (e.g. a balance or minimum-size issue); in that case fix the cause and close again, ideally with a market close.
I closed the position on my exchange directly — why does the bot show an Error?
Because Freya saw the position close outside of it, so it stops managing that bot and flags it. That's by design. Just be aware it may have left the bot's take-profit/stop orders on the exchange — check and cancel any you don't want.
After I close on the exchange, are my TP/SL orders cancelled automatically?
Not necessarily. When you close on the exchange yourself, Freya intentionally leaves the bot's remaining orders alone (you may have wanted them). So check your exchange for any leftover take-profit or stop orders and cancel them yourself. Closing through Freya instead lets it clean those up for you.
What does "Reduce-only order rejected. Position may already be closed." mean?
It means Freya tried to close a position that had nothing left to reduce — almost always because it's already closed. Check your exchange to confirm you're flat; usually there's nothing more to do.
What does "Position not found on exchange" mean when closing?
Freya couldn't find the position to close, typically because it was already closed (often outside Freya). Freya verifies with the exchange and resolves the deal. Confirm on your exchange that the position is gone.
Will a deal I closed on the exchange show in my deal history and P&L?
No. A position closed outside Freya is flagged as closed-externally rather than recorded as a normal completed deal, so it won't appear as a finished deal with P&L. Deals closed through Freya are the ones that show full results.
Panic Sell says some positions failed — what do I do?
Panic Sell closes each position independently, so results can be partial. Check which ones failed, use Retry on them, and if any still won't close, close them individually — or verify on your exchange whether they're already closed.
